Task Map: Getting Hardware Under Cassatt Active Response Management

Intended for use with Cassatt Active Response Premium Edition and Data Center Edition V5.1.

This article describes the high-level tasks for getting application nodes and power controllers under Cassatt Active Response management for utility computing. If your implementation includes power only nodes, instructions are entirely different; follow these instructions for power only nodes: Power Only Nodes and Tiers: Configuration and Management.

Description
1 Understand the basics of node management with Cassatt Active Response Understanding How Hardware Gets Under Cassatt Active Response Management
2 Review the supported options for application power control Recommended Hardware: Application Nodes and Power Controllers
Determine if you'll use automatic discovery and inventory

Automatic discovery and inventory can only be used with integrated power controllers; ensure you have recommended power controllers. Make sure you understand how automatic discovery and inventory work.

Configure default authentication for power controllers in the Cassatt Active Response Controller
Cassatt recommends configuring the same authentication for power controllers. Setting up defaults saves you time because you don't have to specify authentication each time you add another external power controller of the same type. For example, if you have 6 Baytech external power controllers, configure the hardware with the same authentication. Go to: Discovered Pool > Properties > Power Controller Authentication
If manually adding hardware (not using automatic discovery), gather required hardware information The following spreadsheet lists the required information to add nodes and power controllers manually to the Cassatt Active Response Controller (whether bulk loading using a .csv file, or using the wizards).
Import/export hardware spreadsheet > New Nodes - Utility Computing tab
5 Add multi-node power controllers (external power controllers or blade enclosures)

All multi-node power controllers must be added to Cassatt prior to adding nodes.

  1. Go to: Discovered Pool > Power Controllers > New Multi-Node Power Controller and follow the wizard.
  2. Verify that the power controller is added.

After adding a blade enclosure, Cassatt Active Response automatically adds the blades, regardless if the automatic discovery feature is on or off.

6 Add nodes and associated power controllers to the Cassatt Active Response Controller

If adding hardware using automatic discovery:

  1. Check that the Automatic Discovery features is turned on: Discovered Pool > Properties > Automatic Discovery = On.
  2. Power on application nodes.
  3. Go to: Discovered Pool > Power Controllers.
If the power controller for the node is successfully discovered, the node automatically moves to the Nodes list.

If adding hardware manually, use:

Command lines available for scripting: ccnodeimport, ccpowerimport, and ccdeletenode

or the Cassatt Active Response Controller:

  1. If you are bulk loading devices, make sure you have your .csv file ready for importing.
  2. Go to: Nodes > New Nodes and follow the wizard.
After completing the wizard, nodes that are connected to multi-node devices are displayed in the Nodes list. Nodes with integrated power controllers are displayed in Discovered Pool > Power Controller list.
