Dell: Nodes with Integrated Power Controllers

Intended for use with Cassatt Active Response Premium Edition and Data Center Edition V5.1.

This article describes how to configure Dell application nodes with ERA, DRAC4 and DRAC5 integrated power controllers for utility computing. Complete this step before adding nodes to the Cassatt Active Response Controller for Cassatt management.

Step 1: Configure the application node for PXE and network booting

Follow these steps to configure the application nodes for Cassatt Active Response management.

  1. Connect a console, keyboard, and mouse to the application node.
  2. If the first NIC in the application node is not going to be managed by Cassatt Active Response, make sure it is either unplugged, or plugged into its appropriate network.
  3. Power on the application node using the power button on the front panel.
  4. Press F2 to access the BIOS.
  5. Set the boot sequence so "Network" comes before the "hard drive" in the list; the remaining order can be set per your site requirements.

"Network" must come before the “Hard drive”option in the boot order or the node will not boot. If you place “Network” first in the boot order, you gain a small optimization in speed for node discovery and in moving nodes to the free pool. If you are operating in a test environment or you expect to need frequent administrative access to the application nodes, you can set the order to Floppy, CD-ROM, Network.

  6. Select the Integrated Devices option and set as follows.

    Setting
    Enter
Integrated devices Embedded NIC 1.................Enable with PXE
    Embedded NIC 2.................Enable with PXE
  7. Enable console redirection as follows.

    Power controller
    Enter
    ERA Redirection.....................Off
    Remote Terminal Type............VT100/VT220
    Redirection after Boot..........Enabled
    DRAC 4 Redirection.....................Serial Port 1
    Failsafe Baud Rate..............57600
    Remote Terminal Type............VT100/VT220
    Redirection after Boot..........Enabled
DRAC 5 Serial Communications...........On with Console Redirection via COM2
    External Serial Connector.......Remote Access Device
    Failsafe Baud Rate..............57600
    Remote Terminal Type............VT100/VT220
    Redirection after Boot..........Enabled
  8. Set the remaining BIOS parameters as required by your site.
  9. Save the changes and exit.

Step 2: Configure the power controller for DHCP

Follow these steps to configure the application node power controller for DHCP.

  1. Boot the node and access the Dell remote access configuration utility.
  2. Enable DHCP using the following guidelines.

    Power controller
    Enter
ERA and DRAC 4 NIC TCP/IP Configuration Options......Use DHCP is: Enabled
    Ethernet Configuration Options........NIC is: Enabled
    DRAC 5 LAN Parameters........................IP Address Source..DHCP
    Advanced LAN Parameters...............NIC................Enabled
  3. Save changes and exit.
This may take a few minutes to complete.
