iLO2 error reporting anomaly

If you're an astute Info Central reader, you may have noticed that Collage 4.2 has added support for HP hardware that uses iLO2 remote management. (See Application Node Setup: HP.) Collage accesses the on-board iLO2 to control power operations on the node.

One thing you may want to watch for is that the iLO2 sometimes misreports errors when powering up. What happens is, Collage logs errors from the iLO2 that the iLO2 user name and password are incorrect (i.e., they don't match the device user name and password set in Collage for the iLO2). If you're confident that the user name and password for the iLO2 match the user name and password set in Collage, (and the node successfully boots up), you can safely ignore these error messages. (Note that these errors only display in the Collage logs.)

For those with inquiring minds, what's happening is, the iLO2 itself is initializing after powering up, but it is incorrectly reporting to Collage that the user name cannot be found. (It should more properly report that it is refusing the connection while it is powering up.) Collage retries connecting to the iLO2 every couple of minutes, so eventually, the device starts working as expected and the error condition goes away.

So, if you're sure the iLO2 user name and password match the device user name and password that is set in Collage, do not be alarmed by these errors in the Collage logs. Of course, if the node fails to boot up, you may have a real mismatch, which you should then correct.
